How best and cheapest (yes, I know... lol) way to clean up the moss & lichen from the wooden coping on the wall without damaging the wood further? And how to prevent it eg by applying varnish or preservative (what type, how many applications etc etc)? The wood's still very solid.

Well, going by the colour of those x's, I'd say jet wash and then protect with wood oil!

It is the link that was the problem - Imgur are almost certainly the same as many others and don't allow hotlinking, so their server was blocking the request. I downloaded them to my PC and copied them back.

To upload photos here you can choose them from your PC or phone by clicking the Upload a File button below the post text box, or you can drag and drop them on a PC into the post text box. They must be less than 4mb in size - anything over and they won't upload.

          My pleasure.

To answer your question, I would be inclined to pressure wash with a soft lance (don't use a turbo nozzle) and don't go too close. Follow up with a biocide such as this - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Roxil-200-Wood-Patio-Cleaner/dp/B07V1P9MLB and that should help inhibit recurrence.
