I have two penstemon plants, I admit last year I did not cut one back at all!

The stems are now very 'woody' and it almost looks like it has warts small wood bit on the stems? I have read that woody penstemons are what happens when you dont prune them?

Should I cut them back or will they just be woody from now on?

    Thanks

    Hi

do they look alive with all this minus- freezing weather they can be tender, I would'nt trim them yet wait until late March early April and they should re-shoot from the base I would cut down to two or three inches top dress the soil as well with some fresh compost give them some TLC.

So if they have survived the winter they should fine
