Probably a silly question, but I'm wondering if it's possible to buy worms to place into my raised beds?

John, if the soil is good enough, the worms will soon find it. Don`t you worry.:thumb::D

    Thanks!

I just dug in 240 litres of compost and 60 litres of a bark/compost mix so hopefully that should improve it.

If you'r determined to buy worms, then go to a fishing tackle shop and ask for worms. they sell them by the tub for not much money. If you want Tiger worms, ask for brandlings. David's correct though, you shouldn't need to import them.

The easiest way to increase the worm population,is to lime your soil, worms hate acid soil!
Some years ago in New Zealand the sheep pastures were failing because of a shortage of worms.

They were being eaten by some flat worm, (which has now arrived in the UK) and acid soil because of the high rainfall!

So they started liming heavily for some years, and the worms increased and the pastures started improving one again!

Wet some grass at dusk then put a sheet of plastic over, the worms will all come up under the plastic and can be brushed up.

My horse poo piles are stuffed with worms. Horse poo on my raised bed are stuffed too.

My fishing mates have threatened to empty me out.

You can also buy worns online. Wiggly Wigglers, and others sell them online - not just the composting ones either. It will make a huge difference to you raised beds. As everyone has said, the worms will find it - but this would certainly be a good boost to get your beds started.
