One of our pear trees hasn't produced fruit this year and now some of the leaves look as though they have died off. Someone has suggested that this might be Fireblight which is rather scary as it is a notifiable disease.

This is a photo of the branch that we removed earlier today

Fmay, the tree looks healthy enough. If it WAS Fireblight it should affect more than one branch. get rid of the one you`ve cut off, but keep a close eye on the tree.

    Thanks David.
We have removed and burnt the branch but now that we've googled and learned more about fireblight I realise that it would have been a good idea to look under the bark to see if it is red.

There is no sign on other trees and we haven't planted anything new recently. It has been suggested that it can travel along hawthorn hedges and there are plenty of those in this area.

Fmay, a simple tip on recognising Fireblight. If the tree looks as if it`s been set on fire, then9 times out of 10 it`s Fireblight. Also, not all cases of it are reportable. Check the Plant Health website for the current list of notifiable diseases.:thumb:
