This morning as we were going to feed Magic Dog and Splodge, we stopped off at the bottle bank / rubbish bins by the Candida Cafe Bar (the only establishment in our tiny hamlet) and our worse nightmares were realised ....

There in a carrier bag in front of one of the bins were two tiny screaming kittens! They were only about 10cm long, eyes closed and still had their umbilical cords !!! I carefully picked them up, looked around for more and put them into our bottle basket and we came back home. We put them in a basket on a Pamper Pad (use these for when we take the cats to the vets) and tried to give them some milk with a baby syringe and eye dropper. One was Calico so a girl and the other black with white cheeks and chest.

I called our vet who said they were too young to survive without their mother. We could try to feed them every two hours but she only gave them a few hours and suggested maybe it was best if we brought them in and they'd put them to sleep! We felt helpless and were both in tears. While t'other half was trying to comfort / feed them I found the number of one of the nearest animal charities, The Donkey Sanctuary. T'other half phoned (I was too upset) and explained our plight and was told to bring them in. We headed off and quickly found the Sactuary and were led into the large Cat House by the owner, Nan. Then a young Portuguese girl arrived and got a black female cat who had recently had kittens and put her in with them, but she has just been spayed and they didn't think she'd got any milk! The young girl said she will take them home with her if necessary.

At the Santuary there are 20 donkeys, over 120 dogs and countless cats. The facilities are brilliant for all the animals. The Cat House has two large open air rooms (mesh enclosed) filled with baskets, climbers, houses, toys, etc. There were so many little ones in there but older than our two. Some cats roam outside as did many dogs (mostly small ones and puppies) but there is a large enclosure (well field) with mature trees so lots of shade and dotted about everywhere were dog houses and toys and lots of big doggies running about.

Nan said that she recently found a carrier in a rubbish bin full of puppies, some of whom were already dead. Her Santuary neuters animals free of charge - they have vets come over from England and volunteer their services several times a year and they work with a local vet.

We gave them 20 Euros as a contribution and asked if we could call in a few days to see if they survived.

It was a heart-wrenching morning but with a slightly happier ending. Perhaps Candida and Calvos will survive (Candida is the name of the cafe and means innocence; Calvos is the name of the hamlet and means a clearing).

Thanks for listening ... I'll keep you posted.

when we had a holiday in gambia there was a litter of puppies under a sun chair. People brought food from the hotels etc, but they were so infested they would never have survived. a vet was called by some kind hearted person and i am sure he just ended their poor lives.

It spoilt my holiday - I knew they had to be put to sleep, and I could not help blaming the "doo gooders" for keeping them alive in the first place. (don't mean this about you LoL)

I think best thing is if they can be spayed, to prevent further off spring, but having found kittens/puppies, I would do exactly what you have done.

don't forget though that where ther is live stock, ther is dead stock - sad fact of life.

You are a very kind person, please try not to upset yourself.

And if they die, they will have a gentle death... not something to be taken lightly in the animal world....

Good news! :D Candida and Calvos are still alive after three days! :D :D :D They are being hand fed (at all of four days old!) by the young girl (apparently French and not Portuguese) along with a two-day old puppy .. it and it two siblings were also found in a carrier bag but two were already dead. :( I hadn't said but last month this Sanctuary took in 28 kittens of assorted parentage who were found abandoned in a box. What mentality do some people have, or do they one at all. They certainly don't have feelings! Watch this space! :D

PS We're being good and still thinking they may not make it but t'other half says it's fate ... when we lost Puschka in December he said he wanted a Calico ....
