    Hi All,

Could really do with some advice. Wanted to get this Choisya and plant it in this container. I know they don't flower for long but the foliage is quite a dark green and interesting and I think the white flowers would contrast well with the grey. Problem is, it's only 5 inches deep with a diameter of 12 and has a fairly small drainage hole, so I'm not sure it would support the roots, even with a small shrub like this one. Do you think it would stay healthy in there?

Any thoughts and suggestions highly appreciated! :)

    Thanks,

    Nick

Personally, no, sorry, I just think its too small.
It would suit alpines or trailing plants in my opinion.

No Nikalaos ....it’s far too small for a choisya, even short term :)
You chose sensibly, viz., White Dazzler is a relatively dwarf variety.
How about a pelargonium? Great for summer
Echeverias would do well there for 2 or 3 years....?
Or convolvulous maritima......a delightful cascading perennial with velvety purple blue flowers?

Just a thought Nikalaos, how about the black “grass” ophiopogon nigrescens? It’s evergreen, fascinating colour and produces pink flowers in summer?
        Would compliment your grey container.
Tulbaghia Violacea is a silver/blue/grey grass like plant with pinky white summer flowers. Evergreen here but at least semi evergreen :)

bugger! Thanks for the honest opinions guys, I feared you'd say that, haha! Funny you should say that @Verdun, I was thinking of a Convulvulus as someone mentioned it recently on the forum and I loved the look of it, this one...

But the one you suggested is trailing and lovely, so it's certainly an option. Another plant I considered was Geranium 'Rozanne', not really a fan of that cultivar but it might do well considering the size of the container and the fact it's recommended for hanging baskets.

I once grew geranium Crystal Lake in a container for someone. It made for a great display.
My feeling is that Rozanne is prob too vigorous for your pot Nikalaos.....I have a couple of Rozanne plants here and they need room; here they are 1 to 2 metres wide and a metre high. I think they would struggle in a small container :)

Thanks @Verdun, well I already have 'Crystal Lake' in a border on my patio my friend, couldn't exclude that one from my collection, truly wonderful. It will probably be a Convulvulus then...

Quick update, decided to go with your excellent suggestion of Convolvulus sabatius spp. mauritanicus @Verdun (at least I think that's the one you meant). I think the flowers will contrast wonderfully with the grey container and pollinators love them too, from some of what I've read online!

Sorry @Verdun, just to pester you a bit more, will this Convolvulus be OK with just garden soil (heavy clay, so rather fertile) and plenty of grit added, or should I use a John Innes mix? Got it this morning in the post and would like to pot it ASAP!

Hiya again Nikalaos :) Not pestering, it’s what the forum is for :)
I really don’t like garden soil used in pots....pests, diseases etc.....so I would take the trouble to use John innes and add grit or perlite.
A top dressing too of grit would be a nice finishing touch :)

Thanks very much Verdun, which John Innes mix would be best for this plant do you think my friend, No 3?
