My sweetcorn is now growing - very fast - I have to very quickly pull the seedlings out of there seed tray and move them onto the emergency paper pots! And I have a tomato seedling just popped its head up overnight! :yho:

Couple of questions - with this new 'greenhouse' I have, once the seedlings have come up a bit more and I have transplanted them into bigger pots can I just transplant these into the greenhouse instead of being inside? So I can start the next lot of seeds off inside - and can I use the same seedling trays for which I grew the previous seeds in or is it better to start off with new compost??

    Cheers...

Its great this time of year when everything starts to spring up.

Yes you can move the seedlings into your greenhouse, the sooner the better for tomatoes as they like lots of sunshine. Just watch out for overheating in there and open it up on sunny days. It only takes a few minutes for the temp to rise very quickly. You might even need to use shading as well on days like today.

Don't use the same compost for the next lot of seeds, it gets 'exhausted' of nutrients and will go sour. Its much better to use new each time. Keep the used compost for improving your borders.

Oh I forgot to say, get your sweetcorn outside during the day as much as possible to make them nice and stocky - they are really early and will grow far too tall and leggy if you keep them in the greenhouse right now.

If they have only just germinated I would leave them in the greenhouse a bit longer, but when they get to 2" to 3" I would take them outside during the day - somewhere sheltered though, draughts will cause them to transpire more water, which will stress them more.

" So I can start the next lot of seeds off inside"

I have two propagators for seeds, they take 7 x 1/4 sized seed trays each, and I usually plant two types of seeds per tray - I'm usually only looking for 5 - 20 plants of each type.

15-Feb is my first sowing - Aubergine, Toms, Summer cabbage & cauliflower, Chilli peppers

I have a spare set of seed trays, so I can sow another crop once the first lot have germinated, and can come off the heat.

    My Crop Plan has:

01-Mar I sowed Beetroot, Sprouting broccoli, Sprouts, Different variety of Cauliflower, Celeriac, Cucumber, Chard, 3 x types of lettuce, the early-sown Melons, and my Cherry Toms.

01-Apr those were all pricked out, and the seed trays available, and I sowed more Beetroot, Purple sprouting broccoli, Calabrese, Carrots (in paper pots), more Summer Cauliflower, Courgettes, Kohl rabi, More chard, 3 x more Lettuce, rest of the Melon varieties, Salsify, Scorzonera and Parsnips (all three in paper pots), Swede, Sweetcorn

On 01-May I will do another batch of Cauliflower, Cabbage, Lettuce and Swede, and also Florence fennel, French and Runner beans (not in propagator!)

On 01-Jun I will do another batch of Lettuce, plus Mooli radish and chinese cabbage in paper pots

01-Jul more Lettuce - I grow 6 of each of the three varieties in each batch - so its basically 18 lettuce for the month.

On 01-Aug I'm going to have a go at a second sowing of french beans to put in the greenhouse.

Dunno yet about Lettuce for a late crop in the greenhouse.

    01-Nov sow Board bean aquadulce
