Has anyone got any tips on looking after wysteria.

I cut ours back last july quite well and it looks quite good this yr, however it still has a lot of leafy / whippy growth around one section. Basically i think there are a lot of leaders growing in this section and so they dont flower too well.

On the opposite side we have a thick older framework which flowers really nicely.

Any ideas on how i create a good framework on the leafy side ? Do i just find where all the runners come from and prune them out ?

I'd suggest pruning some of the runners out to channel energy into bulking the remainder up. Wisterias tend to only REALLY bloom well after filling their space and being judiciously pruned to maintain shape. Similar to most climbers, the flowers are encouraged the more horizontal the vine is.

I put one in this year and the job for today is to put in the wires to train it up...
