We had a thread a while back saying that XP is still the best and I agree!!!

I have recently bought an ASUS Windows 7 laptop and I am so
fed up with it as it's just not the same - I still prefer XP and so
I am hoping I can change . I found this website that explains
it can be done - has anybody tried it? Any of you IT experts
seen this - is it ok to use?

    Windows 7 in XP mode

To be quite honest I prefer Windows 7 as it is :)...

Yes at one stage I was very pro-XP and thought nothing could beat XP.I gave Windows 7 a shot and thought it was rubbish and went back to XP. After the first Service Pack came out for Windows 7, I gave it another shot and never looked back. I cannot live without Aero Snap and Shake. My bit of advice, don't get any version below Windows 7 Home Premium and make sure you have at least 4 gigs of RAM

Snap - Windows 7 features - Microsoft Windows
Shake - Windows 7 features - Microsoft Windows

:sunny: I have to say I agree with Hadeda, jjordie, that although I was one of XPs biggest fans & never wanted to change, but now I have to say I am not keen on XP at all now & just love 7...!!!! :hapfeet: :D
 You can so much more, so much more easily & quickly with 7 it makes XP look so slow & clunky to me know... Try 7 again jjordie & see it really is easy.. :sunny:

Sorry jjordie but that's not what you want:o that piece of software is to virtually run Windows XP from within Windows 7 not to replace the Windows 7 with XP or to make Windows 7 feel and act like XP:(

The only thing you could do was to remove windows 7 and then buy a copy of Windows XP and install that (which may or may not work well as XP is getting on a bit and might not support some of your hardware...)

I ran XP on my last computer and while it worked fine and was fairly stable it did crash every now and then. I did like the XP format and when I got this computer and ran Windows 7 it took some getting used to, but I must admit I do like Windows 7 and am more than happy with it.:D

I do realise what this software will do and I would so like to be able to use my computer as I did with XP.
I have also been told that removing windows 7 and buying XP to replace it might not be compatible so decided against that.

My reason for wishing to continue with XP is because at my age it is more difficult to learn a new set-up and "old dogs and new tricks" come to mind . :gaagh:

Thanks for your replies. Perhaps I will just have to try harder[IMG]

......unless somebody can tell me different!

jjordie, I'm no spring chicken either and a year ago I was terrified of the computer, I had next to no idea how it functioned and relied on my son to get me out of 'trouble' with it. He emigrated last September and before leaving gave me a crash course over two months. I took loads of notes too.

At my age I find it difficult to retain anything, even now I refer to notes from time to time, the rest is trial and error.

I think we get to the stage/age where it's easier to stick with the same thing because we know it, but unfortunately there are times when we have to move on. Give yourself a few weeks with Windows and it'll 'sink in'. It's not that much different to XP.

          Good Luck :dbgrtmb:

You could always buy a new hard drive and then buy win XP ( I am using xp now) BUT it does seem a bit pointless (and expensive) with all the good reviews of windows 7.

For what it's worth, I made the switch at home from XP to 7 last year and am fully converted. Both of the lappies that I use for my job are XP, so constantly switching between the two systems reminds how much better 7 is.

          My only two gripes are;
1 - moving files onto portable devices is a pain! It only allows me to copy them, and I then have to delete the files manually on the laptop.

2 - Realplayer can be unstable. This has been a bind as I'm digitizing my CD collection which is over 1000 discs.

Well, it's a well documented fact that I know nowt about computerables, but I hate Windows7 with a passion - not least because most of the programs I had on XP (whilst they work on W7) only do so up to a point, which is flaming, ******, annoying when they're saved because I continue to need to use them :gaagh:

Before I had this so-called 'improvement' thrust upon me, I did make enquiries in order to find (somewhere) a new machine that would run XP and whilst, to a simple soul like me, it seemed to be just a question of putting the right bit of operating system software onto a 'blank' machine, it was explained, by a very kind and patient teccie, that 'things' inside had to be compatible and seldom would you find a machine with both sorts of 'thingies'.

The only pale light at the end of this long, dark tunnel, was a lady in PC Weld who suggested that, if I opened a business account, a machine capable of having either system on it could be purchased - something I seriously considered, except all the makes were ones I either hadn't heard of, or have had in the past and wouldn't have again, plus of course the extra 'fee' for changing the operating system.

I've had W7 for about 6 months now and it is, what my late Gran would have described as 'okkered' - it does absolutely nothing that XP wouldn't do except it does it in a much less intuitive way, it's 'clumpy', comes with totally pointless bells and whistles and I miss my little 'egg timer' which has been replaced by some stupid spinning circle thingy, and most of all .... I take great exception to being ripped off by Micorsoft who seriously think I'm going to splash out £170 on a new version of Office, or £120 for the one program, just because I want, use and need Publisher :nono::nono::nono:

It is possible to have a duel boot machine,if you really want, on older laptops I run Linux which is free and needs very little memory, much better than Microsofts expensive cpu hogging, memory eating offerings.
But I still have to run Win 7 on the home network because it would be too hard to explain how to use Linux to everyone and they get confused using different software even if it is better, just because it doesn't look as pretty!
Plus point to Linux you dont even have to run anti virus because it is so much more secure.

Yes, absolutely, people can learn to use computers right up to their 80s, if they want to. I'm also only 57 and I'm damned if I'm giving up without a fight so continuing to learn new things just has to be done. We all have more than enough brain cells to keep us going, (no matter how many got destroyed in a misspent youth) it's just a matter of forcing them into action. Which means determination, practice and extra repetition.

My BF, who is, apparently, a software engineer, says that XP is OK and so is Windows 7 as long as there is plenty of memory, but avoid Vista like the plague, and avoid underpowered Windows 7 machines.

Luckily I've never been scared of computers. Irritated, frustrated, fascinated, yes, but scared, no. It bugs the hell out of me when I see courses being advertised with names like "Computing for the Terrified". How patronising. I've learnt most of what I know (enough to cope with work/leisure) by playing around, so I don't think it's rocket science. They only break if you drop them from a great height, as far as I can tell, so get on and click those buttons.
