    Hi

I snaffled a cutting from a plant that looked like a yellow jasmine. Not a winter jasmine as it was flowering about a month ago, the flowers were a waxy yellow and the leaves waxy and opposite. It has a square stem and is quite robust, not like the white summer jasmine.

I did a nodal cutting and put it in a pot of damp compost in a sealed plastic bag. I didn't use any rooting hormone tho.

At the moment it's not doing anything. I gave it a gentle tug a couple of weeks ago and thought it had rooted so opened the bag a little, but no buds. Gave it a tug again last week and it came loose, so I guess it hadn't rooted. I've sealed the bag up again but it's still not moving.

Did I take the wrong kind of cutting? Is it something that won't grow from a cutting? Should I have used hormone?

My neighbour has a Jasmine exactly as you describe. It has some flowers now, but is significantly more floral later in the year. I understand it to be Winter Jasmine.
It is through to my side of the fence and I have taken several cuttings.
If you scrape the bottom of the stem and hold below ground under a stone it roots easily and then can be seperated and relocated.
It also self roots if left to its own devices eventually.

    I hope that helps.

gcc3663, thanks for the info but it isn't winter Jasmine. I have that growing in the garden, the flowers are much more waxy that winter jasmine who's flowers are much more delicate and papery.

Also, I am not able to layer it as the plant is not in my garden but in a friend's neighbour's... hence the "snaffling" of a cutting.

Everything you've done sounds right, perhaps just a bit of patience and it will eventually root...

I have taken Jasmine cuttings in the past and they have taken a while to root but usually have in the end :thumb:

Funnily enough I have a cutting in the coldframe now done exactly as you have plus a little rooting hormone powder and I scraped the stem a little. This cutting is from one that is growing over and through a fence down an alley near our house, so I "borrowed" a piece before the council cut it back; it has white flowers and dark greeen leaves??

    Hi Bilbo

That's great. Thanks. I'll just keep my fingers to myself and wait then.

This is one of the things I love about gardening, so many plants can be gained for free. I regularly ransack my mum's garden and I am thinking of asking some friends if I can pinch a few bits from them.

I have tried several times to take cuttings from a friend's jasmine. The main plant has lovely yellow foliage and is stunning when it is at it's height. The cuttings have been a selection of rooted runners and cuttings and none of them have taken. This has been over a couple of years and I am thinking of giving up on trying.:(:wallbang:

Sadly the cutting rotted off :(

No matter, I'm not entirely sure where I would put it anyway.
