You would never guess the relations of this

This is in flower at present in our garden, but what IS it related to?

 

I would have a wild guess, and say peony.

 

The flower looks like either a peony (though the centre is wrong) or a dahlia - but the leaf throws that all off - as it doesn't resemble either. I shall look forward to seeing the answer. :confused:

 

Wrong family in both cases, much nearer to home than China or Mexico!

 

I've got pink poppies that look like that but again the leaf is wrong. Is there a cherry as red as that? It's very pretty.

 

Think prickles

 

All the things with prickles that I can think of don't fit that leaf - except perhaps with a huge leap, the bramble.

 

Yes - I was thinking brambles and roses. Double flower also confuses me. Nice though - whatever it is. Even looks a bit like a pink kerria.

 

Fran has it. It is a Rubus (bramble family) arcticus flora plena. Lovely 3 foot tall non prickly shrub but beware when it is settled in it suckers with a vengeance.

 

What do the fruits look like Palustris?
Assuming it does fruit in some way.
