I purchased a young morello cooking cherry tree from a garden centre a couple of months ago.

The leave arent very big, and some went yellow.

I am wondering if I have over watered the tree; its currently around 4 foot high.

How often should I water a small tree before its well established?

    New to this; thank you!!

    Its in the ground.

When we bought it, we dug a big enough whole, I did give it some fish and blood bone, and used plenty of compost.

I am just wondering if I've over watered!!

Were the roots very tightly wrapped in the container when you planted it out?

It might be that the water you are providing isn't really getting to the original rootball, and the roots haven't yet grown out into the surrounding soil. Perhaps "wedge" a 2L pop bottle, with the bottom cut off, upside down really close to the trunk so its into the original rootball and then use that as a funnel to water? If the water flows out of the "top" slowly (which it will do if there is soil/compost obstructing it) so much the better.

The roots were free in that they were not in a root ball. It was not in a pot when purchased, but was in a plastic type bag.

Ah, OK. So bare root so-to-speak. It won't have liked being like that for any length of time, so if it was more than a week like that, or not kept at cool temperatures, that will have upset it and at best my guess is that it will take a season to recover. You say "a couple of months ago" - the Bare Root planting season finishes around end of April, so hopefully it was not later than that (and in particular that the buds were still dormant when it was planted).

The buds werent out on the tree when I planted it, and the leaves arent very big.

Hopefully I shall wait until next year to see if the tree is okay; I have now idea how long it was kept in the bag for at the garden centre.

I suppose it might just be the shock of planting it; hopefuly next year I will know if it okay or not LOL

Might be worth giving a foliar feed of Seaweed which should help act as a tonic for stress. Maxicrop for example
