That is a bargain for a Canon DSLR Yvonne :blue thumb:

I would say you can't go wrong with Canon, but I'm no expert on them. Hopefully @Steve R will be along for a more informed opinion.

Have you thought about a Bridge Camera? I have a Pentax DSLR and am seriously considering trading it in for a Bridge Camera, saves lugging loads of lenses around and will save a few pennies too :) Some of our members have taken stunning photos of wildlife and their garden plants with one:

      Hi Jwk

Thanks for your feedback. I already have a portable "point and shoot" camera for normal day to day photos. What I would really like is a powerful zoom lens, I was actually thinking of a 500mm lens, but I spotted this 300mm at a very good price. I think I need to go to John Lewis and try some out.

Very good price for a DSLR. The lens is good too (I had one). But beware that setting out on the DSLR route rather than the "Bridge" route can be expensive if and when you start to add lenses.
      There's a review of the camera here>

I have the Canon 1100D Yvonne and I have no complaints. The only thing I will point out is, the instruction manual is a nightmare. Apart from reading through the camera functions I abandoned it and relied on word of mouth from others to help me use the camera.

This thread is now quite long but it's certainly worth a read through with regard your choice of lens. :) I'm looking forward to feedback regarding Woo's new lens.

Shop around for prices, Woo got himself a bargain on E-bay. :)

Hi Yvonne, 'bridge' cameras are also know as 'superzooms' for good reason, the Canon SX50 has a 24 to 1200 mm zoom lens :blue thumb:

Just to muddy the waters, Yvonne, here's an extract from a review on the 1100d

As to its direct rivals from other manufacturers, well, there aren’t all that many. The three standouts would have to be the thoroughly excellent Nikon D3100 (£430 and currently subject to a £40 cashback deal), along with the feature-laden Pentax K-r (£400) and the cheap-as-chips Sony A290 (£350). What is surprising, though, is that only a couple of years ago you could get an entry level DSLR for under £300. Even accounting for inflation, it's a bit of a shame that downward trend hasn't continued. Clearly competition from advanced compacts and compact system cameras has caused manufacturers to rethink their pricing structures.

No, Sheal, I "borrowed" the extract and don't feel cheeky enough to put a link in. Yvonne can go straight to the Curry's site to see if the offer is still standing.:dunno::snork:

Nobody has mentioned the absence of image stabilisation and whether they consider that of importance.

The 18-55mm lens with the camera from JL is the non-IS version (the IS version is 60.95 extra http://www.johnlewis.com/canon-eos-...-720p-12-2-mp-2-7-lcd-screen-black/p231212774 ) But if you get the camera & IS lens from Jessops it's only £30 extra.

That 75-300mm lens from JL also doesn't have IS, unlike this one costing £81 more from an Amazon seller http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-70-300mm-4-0-5-6-USM-Lens/dp/B000B84KB6/ref=pd_cp_ph_1

The 75-300mm IS lens also has £40 Canon cashback https://canon-winter.sales-promotions.com/canon-winter/uk/ The cashback offer applies to purchases up to midnight, January 26 which gets it within about £40 of the non-IS version.

              @Yvonne Donnellon

              I've just read this
So that info re cashback on the Amazon site is incorrect as it's not being sold at that price by Amazon themselves!

And unfortunately Amazon charge £40 more (what a coincidence!) than the Amazon seller, which cancels out that cashback.
