Lost my dahlias over-winter so am giving Zinnias a try for the first time. I have quite a few seedlings coming along. Some in RootTrainers because I read they don't like root disturbance. What sort of spacing should I give them, I'm hoping to cram them in closer than dahlias. They were a cheap packet 'Country Value Giant Double' says they get to 75cm tall and to space them at 25cm apart, but can I space them closer? Do they need support?
I grew Zinnias for several years, mainly Zinnia Sombrero and Z. Brilliant fire. Not quite as tall as your variety. For a display I planted them a lot closer than 25cm, I just allowed a hand width between each planting hole so about 12cm. I did stake the odd ones where required.
I've grown a few most years, this year I'm growing so called giant ones. I don't see them as bushy plants, they mostly have an upright growth habit, and can be brittle.
They are very pretty. A flower I keep forgetting about. I must write them on my list for next year ! I think they look rather old fashioned. I like old fashioned. I'm the same myself
I have quiet a few growing nicely split between 3 long planters. But they are such water hogs, I have to water them everyday if it does not rain. Very pretty in the multi. colors came with the package. Will have to think on it for next year if I want them again.
I seem to have a more double flowering kind this year, some are showing the centre but others are not.
