What type of clematis is it though @Karen1986 ? The early ones don't need, or like rich moist soil in the way the large flowered ones do. The soil doesn't look very hospitable though. It might be better to dig a little further along if that's possible.

I'd think the most important thing is to have a suitably sized pot - ie a pretty big one, or else you'd have to keep taking it out and doing some root pruning, and keeping the top reasonably well trimmed.
