You could maybe have a look at Abies Koreana. Certainly you would not have an issue of them getting too large as very slow growing, undemanding and I have 2 which I have had in planters for years...

I've found rot around the base is orange in colour and the cactus rots from the base up. Obviously there are probably other types, and I agree, once rot gets into the flesh there is not much that...

Anybody grown Setton onions from sets.
Thanks @noisette47 . Absolutely agree flat ones are a pain in the posterior. Maybe ok if you don’t have to deal with peeling them! The Setton sets are quite a bit more expensive than Sturon but...
