Traditional tarred jute (fillis) string would solve the problem, if you can find some. It remains weather resistant but should 'give' under increasing load once the tree expands its girth. Test to see if you can break it with 'bare hands' . Jute should break, hemp- not so likely !

Thanks Lizzie, I do love Rosemary.I guess for a good few years most the western side of the order will be very sunny as the trees are still small. So sun loving plants should thrive in there at the moment. I guess I will have to modify the planting over time.

Yes i have noticed this and am ok to apply more compost but my issue is always that the compost can only be applied to the surface so im never sure as to whether nutrients in any newly applied compost will actually get to the roots

Now is a good time to prune, before new growth appears.
