    Horsetail and composting

    Right, one compost bin done. On dpm, slabs, dpm and I've left space around the bin to get the mower so there shouldn't be any little corners for horsetail to hide. I'm thinking messy/wildlife area...

    Compost or not?

    Spose it depends what composting your doing. Im guessing they would get killed if you are hot composting because of the temperature being up to 60c so i know fly eggs and flies get killed in that...

    Supposed to be OK, but some years ago the RHS recommended using a mask/not inhaling, so perhaps use one of these?

    We just chuck ours in whole. If we add a sheet or two of paper we just screw it up, but sheets of card we rip up. We also add the contents of our paper shredder.

    I agree with rusty, I remember my grandmother's neighbour using comfrey on her chrysanthemums and on veg when fruiting too. Seemed to make an incredible difference.

    Oh dear, that doesn't sound good :( It must be a common problem, so probably the compost - unless they've all been too cold?My only seedlings to have gone like that are opium poppies in compost....

    Chicken Pellets - where to use?

    I use pellets quite extensively in my beds. Especially around my palms and bamboo.Sprinkle them around quite thickly. And then give a good watering.

    Ellie you don't need to feed seedlings, as John says there's enough nutrients in the soil for around six weeks and by that time they are usually potted on into fresh compost. I've never fed any...
