My guess would be pigeons. They can strip plants down to the ground between sunrise and you getting up in the morning.

Seed potatoes and chitting
I split a box of spuds with a chum ... he's planted his a fortnight ago (without chitting), mine are chitting in egg boxes - stems are about 1/2in long (if that) ... these are Bintje (?) earlies...

To be honest the propagator is not even switched on as its by a bright window in the utility room. It does though protect seeds and seedlings from our 2 cats that insist on digging into any area...

I roughly planted a walnut (shop brought) shell included, in a 12" round pot, about 3.5 years ago, just to see what would happen......Its about 5' tall now!!

Hi Sky Yes its normal for spinach to have pink stems and yes its ok to eat them, i find the baby leaf spinach you buy in shops ok for salads but if i want spinach with a hot meal the "tougher"...
