    You don't have to wait for the halms to die back Sargan, after 12 weeks I'd say they will be ready. You can just try one root to begin with, if still too small leave for another week or two.

    I think any types of salad/leaf vegetables will grow fine, they don't need much sun anyway. Fruit I'm not so sure about, since they usually need full sun to grow.
