That looks like a good idea Harry, it should work well . I planted hundreds of baskets (a long time ago) for customers, and there was no water gel then - as far as I know, so I used plastic saucers in the base of the baskets with a tube from top to bottom to pour water into.

I use 6" of Leaf Mould to cover blank areas. Works a treat and helps the soil. Never get weeds in it but occasionally get little oak tree and conker tree seedlings.

Many garden centers have a recyling point usually in the car park, where you can find old plastic pots for free. All they need is a good clean.

Personally, I don't have anything against Monty, I think he is a good presenter but the programme seems to linger too long on too few subjects. I also hate it when they show gardens in tropical countries because it doesn't seem relevant.
