The reason that they're weeds is that their survival instinct is strongest. What weeds do you have?Weeds seeds that land on top will germinate. The lining should sort out most perennial weeds underneath, but not all.Where in the UK are you?

Threw mine out yesterday :( Nice plump tubers (albeit only single-tuber + stem), looking perfectly healthy, not rotting, compost nice and damp ... but they were right on the surface of the pot ... I'll remember that for next year (remind me if I forget, OK?!!)

Thank you Rosie, but as you see I live here on Mann and if possible I try to source things here first as the shipping costs to the island get passed on to those who are buying from the mainland, which quite often makes items more expensive.

look fine to me some TLC and they will romp away , give them a good soak and check the pots for slugs before you plant them , may be some lurking in the bottom of the potSpruce

I've seen just one in central Scotland. Fife to be exact. It was extremely confused by a lone streetlight in an industrial park. As I moved closer it'd float away, and when I leant back again it'd get back into position.. Hehe. Had some fun with that I gotta admit.

Mortar bed looks fine, the grass will be ok with watering and you can grow lots of Mediterranean plants in the raised planter. Don't worry, it always looks worst at this point!

Yup, if the are doing well, they can become rampant.

If you don't want to move them like "M" has suggested try putting some blood, fish and bone around them and water in gently.

I reckon its a common carder bee. Check on the Bumble Bee Conservation trust as they have a ID page that I find really helpful.
