When you use a weed killer the weeds should be actively growing, the fact that you want to use it when the grass is dormant suggests you want to use it late or early in the year, the weeds will also be dormant at that time.

Sadly they are almost impossible to dig out and pot up and they do very badly in pots too. Best way with seed is to sow it where you want the plants to grow. Not got any seed this year, we cut them down as soon as the flowers had finished.

It sounds like mildew. If the plant is very dense you could try thinning it out to let more air circulate. You could also spray with a fungicide, but obviously it won't help the leaves that are already diseased.

Thank you Sheal, they are a later garden feature but will give 3 months worth of display and I find dead heading dahlias a lot easier than many other garden plants. A good value for money feature I think, Jenny

if you're planning on giving it a go it wouldn't be a bad idea to start with a number of them as opposed to just the one so the kids wont notice if the odd one goes to the big cabbage patch in the sky or...eh...explodes with parasitic wasp larva
