Mine overwintered quite happily in a frost free greenhouse, and is now growing well again. It was quite tall in its first year, so I can well understand Pete's comment that they can get straggly.

Rockery development
I agree, I wouldn't like to see the fence in a few years with all that soil built up against it. I was thinking of doing a rockery, and I'd then fill it with Campanulas (I know I bang on about...

Transplanting mature annuals?
I'd not move any of them now, mostly annuals or short lived perennials. I dont think they would like being moved now.

Good idea to root prune?
It cant hurt, but I do remember reading its best done a year in advance, gives the tree time to grow more fibrous roots. Never tried it myself so only passing on what I have read.
