Sounds good Victoria We are off to the Algarve again in a couple of weeks , I'll keep my eye open for Favas . I like grilled sardines as well but they always look to fiddly to eat with all the bones , I just stick to the lovely sardine paste on the couvert.

Planting in pots would be the only answer if you're not going to dig the border over. If you do want to plant in the border you're going to have to thoroughly dig over the soil to at least a spit's depth, then add lots of well rotted manure and organic material such as straw to help improve...

Thanks for all the help and info. I decided to say thanks but no thanks and will keep to using stuff which is made for the job. Even if what I've bought gives me a year of little weeds in the area "membraned" that will mean I can then attack other areas which have gone wild!

Best time I've found is shortly after growth has started. My preferred method is to slice in violently (they're tough!) with a spade in the middle and then prize up with a fork. The root system is also bulky so it can be an effort. Slicing in before lifting prevents slipping on a wobbly plant...
