I had a similar issue but a flower bed not veg, (albeit no flowers in it yet so very inviting!) - I covered the whole bed in fleece and all kinds of junk; canes, pots, rubber snakes..no poo since!...

Thanks for all the help and info. I decided to say thanks but no thanks and will keep to using stuff which is made for the job. Even if what I've bought gives me a year of little weeds in the area...
