Sorry, the penny has dropped! Fat bergs ... grease icebergs. When I said I don't like grease on my hands, I didn't mean like car grease (I used to work on cars, do my own maintenance up to and including changing a head gasket) ... it is kitchen grease I can't stand, cringe!!!

Could this rapid growth be due to overwatering? I'm very rusty on this as I grew Acidanthera for a couple of years over a decade ago and distinctly remember the moisture required by them being overstated in most online articles I read about growing them. It's just that the OP referred to them...

@Kevin Cowans I wouldn't do it ATM because of all the heat we're having, transplanting's probably best done post-flowering IMHO when the temperatures start to dip and I would dig up as much soil as you can around it and try to move the whole thing as unobtrusively as possible. Buzz buddleia...

Also growing Shirley and SunGold in the greenhouse which were a bit spindley to start with but both now set on the third truss. A regular is Gardeners Delight but they have been terrible and very badly drawn to 3ft and no flowers ! Tried taking some sideshoots as cuttings but they also grew...

I'd just do it, privet is tough and a hard cutback wont do it any real harm.

Japanese Anemonethe name sounds great lol ,,, take a good year or two to settle in as well ... thinking about it they dont produce that much flower ... mine was a gift from a friend so I am loathed to take out as the annual visit first thing she checks in the garden ...

Thanks, I am sure it is the Thick-legged Hoverflies, Syritta pipiens. Your link has some wonderful Flickr photographs of it, which even distinguish between male and female. It has that very distinctive swollen femur, which looks like something I have seen on bumblebees.I will search Flickr...

It does always readily take up the litre of water from the bottom. I presume it would do that even if overwatered, would it?

Check for stem damage first.

If you can store tubers ok in the cellar I cant see why lots of the smaller stuff cant be overwintered in a similar way, maybe just be careful not to let the pots dry out.

Yes definitely, I know what you mean by the flatness, I'm thinking that can be rectified by something taller in the centre or something like Bacopa draping over the flat top.
