Well now, I removed all the side-branches with buds close to emerging from the wilting plant, put them in water, and, as you can see, they're nearly all out.

No chemical in it? Only it looks like some chemical has spilt on the hedge to kill it off

It wouldn't....clematis are greedy for food and water! Thing is....the bamboo rhizomes will be filling the space, even if there's nothing apparent on top. How about sticking some garden gnomes in? Seriously....nothing will compete with bamboo.

It has been known for a long time that frogs shriek or scream and that it is due to stress or alarm but not many have heard it. Totally different to the normal mating calls. Even Newts sometimes squeak when picked up

Thanks for that. Probably right about the soil, or absence of it, and about re-potting, although goodness knows how I'd get it out. Agree about weight, too, I often do that with outside pots. I'll try the weight test when I can find a way to get close enough to get my arms round it!

The landscape architects I worked with used to specify 150mm for grassed areas, 450mm for landscaped areas (shrubs) and 300mm to rear garden areas for growing stuff. They thought more about shrubs tban vegetables.

To be brutally honest even the good one looks like its not happy. Is it a sunny aspect? As said earlier a repot would help.
