What has happened to my sunflower?
Well now, I removed all the side-branches with buds close to emerging from the wilting plant, put them in water, and, as you can see, they're nearly all out.

Looking for shrub (?) recommendations
It wouldn't....clematis are greedy for food and water! Thing is....the bamboo rhizomes will be filling the space, even if there's nothing apparent on top. How about sticking some garden gnomes...
