    Thanks for the responses Whoever originally designed the garden must have loved birds as we have a lot of different plants already like hawthorn, dogwood, cherry etc.I'll check out blackthorn...

    It won't hurt but I don't plant that deep. But if you don't go a little deeper then they will just damp off, keel over and die.

    I'd be grateful for help with a shady problem. My neighbour's Leylandii hedge is huge and shades one side of my SW facing garden. The soil beneath these trees is horrendous - bare, dry & acidic....
