But as I have an excess of Nitrogen according to the test will this not just increase the inbalance further ? I seem to be ok on the Nitrogen front. I'm also wary of giving onions too much...

Thanks for the tip about aconitums lazy gardener - I will sort out some slug defences round them. My mum grows them and they are gorgeous - but I have a weakness for blue flowers. Hope yours...

Id use it to multch the base of the hedge and around shrubs.BTW if Id been doing the job Id of sudgested laying rather than just topping it as this creates a denser hedge.
