I'm also wary of giving onions too much nitrogen as you know it tends to give them thick necks which are no good for showing. I think I'll stick to...

Thanks for the tip about aconitums lazy gardener - I will sort out some slug defences round them. My mum grows them and they are gorgeous - but I have a weakness for blue flowers. Hope yours reappear soon!

Just hedge trim the sides lightly this year then lay it next winter.

Id use it to multch the base of the hedge and around shrubs.BTW if Id been doing the job Id of sudgested laying rather than just topping it as this creates a denser hedge.

Sandra I know what you mean Bob treated me to rock lights as well as bright spot lights last year and 'they' have started to get enough charge in them these last few weeks to shine up as it gets dark.Hel.xxx.

Simon any size container will do even an old bucket if you so choose just remember to drill a few draining holes in the bottom and away you go.I just dig out a hole slightly bigger than the container, loosen the surrounding soil and pop the thing in.... it will of course stop a thug growing...

OK, I have some orientals coming along, they haven't flowered yet, but they are coming through allot bigger this year, just keep an eye on them & keeps the slugs & snails away & also keep an eye out for the horrid red lily beetle.. :eek: I usually spray mine for that with a systemic later...
