Thanks very much for responses; I had expected someone to suggest the easy route of replace topsoil, but as NewbieGreen so rightly says this will not provide nutrients, nor drainage.As a matter of interest ten years ago we imported tons of sand, and then topsoil to improve this heavy clay...

This happened to my 'Viridis', too. I am not sure what it was but the tree has recovered and is fine now. It still looks like a nasty injury though, if you look closely. Since I have a couple of these I noticed it didn't happen to the one that was planted in the shade garden. Not sure what that...

Welcome mtngirl you can get humane traps for moles voles or shrews once caught you can set them free, it sounds like a mole from the size of the hole, you can try to either dig them out or smoke them out but you could injure it.If you google "mole traps" you will get an abundant choice of lethal...

There are a whole variety of water features available. depends what you want. It should not be too big for the area or on the same token too small (like a table top feature outside would be too small) You can make your own it is very easy, but give it some thought as to what you want it to look...

Think I'll try the Spring then, good point about knowing where they are many a time I've forgotten and attempted to plant something else only to find a plant already there :DAlso the protection factor must be a positive one and I can put off the hard work until next year.

thanks walnut..I sort of thought that was the case..guess my greenhouse is too much of a novelty still so was itching to get sowing. I'll take your advice and wait till spring for the rest of my seeds. Many thanks Barbarax

i know its frightening .. remember when i use to tell my mum i was wrapped up snug in the tent. forgot to tell her we had took the tent to blackpool .. ps always drive past an check the tent :D

Lynne I know where you are coming from as I had the same problem on my front garden..... rock hard clay!Glad to write mine is now well sorted as the old gentleman (who had the house before us) left a HUGE old pile of compost that I learnt from my neighbours had not been touch all the while...
