At the end of the season I used to find cutting the plant off at ground level and hanging it up in a dry shed was a good way of ripening any green fruits. They still get a bit of sap from the stem that way for a bit longer.

I read an article about this elsewhere, where it disclosed that some local authorities are making a big profit out of this (but are not proposing to pay gardeners for supplying them with their valuable garden waste).

Didn't bother this year with zinnia the slugs usually make a meal of them, I dont know if they come true but they may do if that's the only variety you grow

I've fitted them myself above ground for front garden, but we had professionals do the back garden and they reckoned it doesn't matter. Since the rot happens at ground level, the rest of the post above ground will still be mostly OK. And putting post and spur in the ground together makes it...

The Champagne Socialists at Bbc Glasgae have more or less cancelled this already. Its been off air most of the summer. They will claim ratings are low and this will enable them to scrap it altogether. To be replaced with a cooking,antique hunting,pc, bore athon focussing on Glasgow or Glasgow.

How old is the bamboo? It looks as if it could be Phyllostachys nigra, the canes of which go darker with age ending up as shiny ebony black after a couple of years. Not sure about the twining stuff could be bind weed. I would cut off at ground level, remove and then treat regrowth next year with...

Our winters tend to be colder, and drier, than the UK, so we often see a winter low of -10c, and I have known a week when we had a daily high of -5c. That being said, the last few years have not been that cold, with just an occasional -10c.I have worn out a snow-shovel in just 6 years, though!!

Hi. We have a very large Photinia, more like a tree than a shrub. It must be about 18ft high or so and I am not sure how to prune it. It looks terrific but it is getting out of hand. Can it be hard pruned? It is quite bare at the bottom.

Adrian's father, Alan, was also a brilliant gardener and we still have the tree that he gave us. We were originally introduced to him by my cousin who was a specialist Dahlia grower and had his own small nursery. Things weren't as commercial and frantic in those days.
