Thanks for your advice, I have only lived here since November and I'm a very new gardener so I have no idea what type of soil I have. I'm hoping that as it has survived at least the last winter it is in a good position, certainly at it's present height it is sheltered by a dry stone wall.

I've done a similar area in the past and i pegged it out as descibed prev to get it level, laid the membrane,cut out a circle in the membrane to 3 inches smaller than the stone circle i intended to lay, then laid a dry sand/cement mixture, to about 2 inches thick upon which i laid the circle.Hey...

one of my aubergines got snailed!! so is now a pathetic stump, and all, including the bog standard tomatoes are so small!!!! I had 3 out of 4 tomatillos come up, and now have 2 out of 4 aubergines.... I'm doing a fab run on microscopic plants!! roll on some decent warm weather!!!!!!

Just break up the top 1/4" (6mm) of soil. The aeration should help the surface layer dry out and the slime (it might be an early stage of moss) should at least be controlled. If it's really bad then add sharp grit to the top of the pot as well and cut down on the watering.

you can keep pansies flowering, and stop them getting leggy by trimming them back when they get a bit straggly. You won't be able to put out a hanging basket with lobelia and other bedding plants yet - not until May at the earliest, but you can certainly plant it up, and have it maturing in...

I agree with PeterS, this is the best way. planting potatoes in rough ground also helps to break up the soil, even if you dont use the produce, any old sprouting potatoes will do
