Campsis arrived in good time and was a very healthy plant, hopefully I can keep it that way! The removed climbing hydrangea has provided several plants in addition to the main one and I've put those in various more shaded areas

You should be OK to give all the privet some blood, fish and bone and to water if there's no rain. BFB is a gentle, slow release fertiliser which shouldn't cause lots of soft new growth which might get hammered by icy winds or frosts.

If i root them in compost they just die off, so i root them in water, anytime of year. I cut off any buds that develope, i let them grow some roots then pot them up. Keep moist for a while for them to adjust to the change and i still cut the buds off. But the softer shoots are better to root.

I would probably just plant the spent bulbs in a part of the garden and see what appears next year. (and buy new bulbs for the tubs later next year). Eventually I'll have bulbs everywhere .......

And roses.

If it is H. niger ( and it sounds like it with a white flower in winter) then they are not as prone to the fungal disease as are H. hybridus. They do like a soil with plenty of organic matter so try adding some leaf mould.

I'm starting mulching today but that would be with home made compost (plenty of it) on the veg plots. The plots get a fair amount of it each Autumn and very lightly forked in and then covered with black porous membrane that keeps the weeds at bay and warms the ground early in the Spring.When...

Think you have a Hydrangea just in front of that rear bush ? which like the Roses should be ok to leave outside.You need to find the name of the other flowering plants and then look them up on the web to see if they are classed as Annual or Perennial, and if the latter, are they fully hardy...

I also have an orchid that has never flowered, doesn’t worry me though.

All is well now. Repotted as advised, cut all dead and decaying roots and replanted in new orchid mix. This was last year and now I have plenty of Aerial routes and think we're on the way to recovery. So thanks to everybody for advice

Had to look it up, not good with the fancy names, but I have a nice one, Trout Lilly . its yellow. I am sure the place I would recommend would not ship across the pond. Mine is doing very well.

I agree! I know it helps drainage but I always find those nasty little grey ones in the slots underneath between the drain holes. And there are probably lots of others just inside the drain holes that you can't see
