Two trains of thought with hebes. Light pruning with shears to maintain shape(how I do it) Hard prune with heavy machinery to maintain shape(hit or miss if it survives...maybe)

Just a wee update. The Hebe was toast. I left it until way into spring but no signs of life and it had to go. Replaced it with a nice wee Acer.

I can relate to your problems as cutting grass with me is too much, everything has to be sitting down to get done. If another project pops up then the other gets left.

You should be OK to give all the privet some blood, fish and bone and to water if there's no rain. BFB is a gentle, slow release fertiliser which shouldn't cause lots of soft new growth which might get hammered by icy winds or frosts.

If i root them in compost they just die off, so i root them in water, anytime of year. I cut off any buds that develope, i let them grow some roots then pot them up. Keep moist for a while for them to adjust to the change and i still cut the buds off. But the softer shoots are better to root.

I would probably just plant the spent bulbs in a part of the garden and see what appears next year. (and buy new bulbs for the tubs later next year). Eventually I'll have bulbs everywhere .......
