Just leave it Jan for now . Let it grow and mow it when it needs. Never mow it too short , all the pro lawn gardeners say this causes problems. If you browse through the GC lawn section , there...

Getting an even coloured lawn

Like you say, lawns need ongoing care and attention, but once sorted, it can be fairly routine. I put the pic up to show how things can look given a relatively short time

Conditioning soil after conifers
