Help! Lawn looks like 'Perfect Storm'!
Nicola your lawn is not huge at all - my parents had their lawn rotated and returfed last year which is larger than yours and it wasn't expensive. It was well worth it as it looks great...

Just to add to Kristen's reply.....grass like most other plants will create new growth by mowing. If you prune a plant it tends to branch out and become bushier, the same happens with grass except...

Gotta agree with JWK and Kris, it does look like it is a compaction problem.. I would agree the lush area was once a probably border as well, so soil not as compacted..
