I used the hole poking method aswell! (When I aerated it) no idea if you're meant to fill it with seeds when you've done it, but turned out alright!

This is all probably a little too late but.....we have very heavy clay soil here in France. It really depends on the time of year as to when you should work it. Too wet and you cannot do a thing....
