My plan is to apply a selective weed killer, scarify then top dress and seed. I may also hire a hollow tine machine to air the lawn.

That looks good to me. Using topsoil or compost is okay. I said compost because if you have to buy it, it's cheaper than topsoil.It's time consuming isn't it? The small jobs always seem to take a long time.

My previous post for where I got mine from.Buying grass seed online - a recommendationI got the fine quality grass. It's pretty well established by now. Being very fine too, it's less work to cut. Depends on how much traffic you're likely to have on the lawn though.

Hello thanks for your answers. I have looked up Herb Robert and I think Macraignil2 is correct. The leaves on this are rather pungent and I had plants that looked like this in a wild section of the garden so think it may have seeded.

Thanks ARMANDII, good question. My reasoning was purely to give the new seed the best chance possible to get established over winter. Also, it hasn't been fed since Spring and the soil is pretty poor (compacted chalky/clay) with lots of tree roots.

Great stuff HarryS. I had a little Bosch one that lasted 6 years of throwing it about doing awkward lawns and went pop in the end with smoke! Can’t complain, it worked hard. Can’t go wrong for £280, should be just right for your needs.

Lute chap here too. Handy tools as well as the mesh wire systems called dragmats for seeding but they are expensive but can be found at reasonable amounts from trade suppliers. Fine if you are into lawns but for a home owner it might be an over kill. They are mostly used in the sports industry...

With the benefit of hindsight, I'm going to suggest not getting there in the first place. Workmen generally don't have much respect for the area around them. A few OSB or cheap ply 8x4 boards can help save your high-traffic areas, and sit at the back of the garage when not needed.Of course...

Way too late to spray now due to temperatures.herbicides should be used when the plants are in full growth so spraying chemicals or applying them when performance is projected to be low is not great.its worth noting that if the grass plant is weak the herbicide can damage the plant.
