Nathan - may I respectfully suggest that your section on what to do this month just has one permanant link to the RHS calender/diary and my april to do list is deleted. Much better way for UK gardeners to get robust monthly advise. I hadn't realised that the RHS had provided such a page, duh!!...

One of the problems with common names is that some plants have a lot of them!! I am assuming your 'apple blossom tree' is not an apple but one of the ornamental Japanese cherries, in which case I wouldn't prune it unless you really have to, as you will lose the flowering shoots. Hope this helps...

I would think that what you have is a central bud surrounded by roots. The bud should point upwards and the roots spread out.
