What is ailing these fellows?
Just had another look at mine, it looks like it happened a while ago, the holes are not fresh, and I agree it could have been some kind of caterpillar, but probably last year. Sorry pic is a bit dark.

Sign that your compost is a bit too wet. Trouble is Squash are very susceptible to almost all insecticides. I would change the compost you are using for a non-peat one and increase the draining...

HiLooks like they have been sprayed with something and it has effected the leaves , it reminds me of a time in one of my other houses I lived in and the guy next door sprayed his apple trees...
