If it is leylandii it is not only dead but it looks as though you have a number of them there. Leylandii grow very fast (a metre a year) and very tall (30 metres). They can be kept looking good...

I've got them too. They won't damage your crop which doesn't come till next year but they make a mess of the plant. (I am assuming you mean purple sprouting broccolli?)
