2016 Tomato Growing

Do they need rooting powder @JWK or do you just 'bung them in?'

 

I by accident have bust side shoots of Tomato plants on several ocassions and just "bunged them in)! I've usually buried a good 3/4 of the shoots and it's worked. I didn't use rooting powder. I am not nearly as knowledgeable as JWK so if he replies something different to me I'd go with what he says

 

It is very small sideshoots, i wait them grow big

 

Thanks to Scrungee giving me the idiot's guide to saving Tomato seed, I sowed some of my saved Garden Pearl (not F1 so will grow true) few days ago in the heated propagator. Sowed 20 seeds and bingo 20 seedlings appeared. I have been in the process of potting them on as don't want them in the propagator for too long. I've discovered that 3 of the seedlings have 3 1st leaves rather than 2 and 1 seedling has 4 1st leaves? Is this quite common? Should I just treat then as normal or bin them? Have plenty more saved seed so not a big deal if the oddly numbered leafed seedlings are best discarded.

 

Thanks JWK,I'm glad you too think it unusual. I can't remember any seeds I've sown before which should have had the "normal" 2 1st leaves having more. I'll keep them going and see what happens. Funnily enough I thought that the extra leaves might be good too! I picked the best plant (had 10 to choose from, grown from bought seed) to save seed from. The Tomatoes on the best 1 were very slightly nicer but I don't think there was any other difference to the other plants. Time will tell if I have a new variety...unlikely!
