Hi @"M" yes I'm afraid I do.... last year I planted about 8 new roses and 5 of them were chomped on by the deer that somehow get into the garden so I only had a short display on them

Its strange really as all the leaves are amongst daffs and they seem to be ok and untouched where as what I think are bluebells all the tops have been like chopped off.... I'll take a photo tomorrow and post as maybe its not bluebells and something else :dunno::dunno::dunno:

In one the areas in the garden I am working on I have now nearly completed all my planting and between them I have scattered wild flower seeds as its a corner of the garden and I think that it will benefit from the colour and the height. I'm also hoping that it will attract the butterflies and the bee's. I paid a little bit more for the seeds as last year when I scattered some nothing materialised!

The only GC member who immediately springs to mind who has had to contend with any deer issues is @shiney - he may be able to give you some advice (other members may exist who have deer issues :heehee: ).
Sorry to hear about your roses, so disheartening for you (let alone the expense!) :grphg:

I was so excited and thought that once they start to fill out they will look lovely... yeh... in my dreams.... I had to cut them back as every leaf and rose was gobbled up!! Not this year... I have a plan:fingers crossed: well I think I have :heehee:

I do know that some cattle will eat Bluebells, but this may be because the farmer would always keep he's cattle tight on food (grass)

The deer never took the bluebells in our garden :noidea:.

You say that the leaves look like bluebells, so you are not really sure. At this time of year some of the allium family can look like bluebell leaves - particularly the allium siculum.

This wouldn't solve the problem of what's eating them

Do you have any deer fencing? I put up some chicken wire fencing where our garden backs on to the field. It's 2m high but we still got some deer in :mute:. I found that more adventuresome of them were climbing the fence - jumping up and scrabbling over. I solved that problem in two ways.

I slightly loosened the top part of the wire so that it wasn't rigid. This meant that if they did try to grab the top and scrabble over, the chicken wire near the top would flex towards them and they had to drop down. Where I wasn't able to do that I used the 'soap method'. Apparently deer greatly dislike the smell of soap - not any of your posh perfumed type :nonofinger: but the bog standard basic soap. I hang little pieces of that in muslin bags on the boundary. I was taught that by the head gardener at Bressingham. They can't keep the deer out (too much ground to fence properly) but the hang the muslin bags on canes in the flower beds. We cut an ordinary bar into about five or six pieces. That tends to last about six months before being washed away by the rain.

Are you sure the droppings are from deer? Rabbit, and even squirrel, droppings can look similar at this time of year. Later in the year they tend to be more clumped together but at this time of year the droppings can be separate and very similar to rabbit. Deer tend to have much shinier droppings than rabbit. It's surprising what you learn over the years! :heehee:

I know it's not sheep as they just can't get in as we have a hedge all around and gates on both entries...:) Deer ... rabbits... ...birds...squirrels :dunno:

@shiney ...This is what is in the garden ..... I can only identify them as bluebells? I love the idea of the soap... just cheap soap in bags... I think I can do that :)
