Tumbelina

I have 4 Tumbelina Belinda Petunia Tumbelina Belinda | J Parker Dutch Bulbs
Saw them in Maria colour in the Sutton’s newsletter, then came across them on a market, had to give them a try. So, silly Q, if you’re planting them in a hanging basket like this Plantopia Hanging Basket: Product Review - Gardening Products Review with the holes in the side, would you put them through the holes and other more upright stuff in the top? Or plant them in the top and ignore the side holes and just let them tumble over the sides?
I prefer this style of hanging basket as it has a bit of a reservoir at the bottom rather than water just peeing out! With a cut off pop bottle upside down, you can get the water where it’s needed

 

We have the easy fill baskets and also some Tumbelina. I will be putting Tumberlina and other trailers including Nepeta in the sides and top and an upright in the middle. I always fill my baskets full and they trail to the floor.

 

Yay, one vote each way! I went with tumbelina in the sides, trailing and upright lobelia in the top. Green woolly liners from boyes and the little clip in ‘doors’ on the hanging basket are holding everything in nicely

 

Just coming back to this with an update. The cut off bottle is ok, but 500ml was the max depth that’d fit and I only used one. Filling it once a day wasn’t enough, so I’ve been having to soak them in a bucket overnight. The tumbelina stems are quite brittle so it’s been a tricky operation. Next year, I’ll only plant flexible stuff in the sides, like lobelia/creeping jenny etc.
When will they design a hanging basket that isn’t full of holes? Poorly drained would hardly be a problem, just water them less
I’ve lost a couple of calabranchoe in other baskets and replaced them today with some rampant lobelia that was taking over its container. I put lids on the upside down bottles and poked holes in the sides. Just watered tonight and it’s still all peeing out of the little doors all over the floor
I spoke to a lady in a local general store that has a lovely range of gardening stuff at very nice prices She says she gives her baskets (she had photos, they were very impressive) 2 watering cans full a day Puts one on and then the other 15 mins later. I can’t get the 500ml bottle full without it ending up all over the floor. She said that’s because they’re dry but they certainly weren’t dry tonight after their soaking since Thurs.

Hu daisybelle, you can get what are called " hanging pots " . They're basically large plant pots with stiff hangers that clip on.

Do you use water retention granules ? I use them in all my summer bedding, whether they be in pots, troughs or hanging baskets.
I also use them with plants thay require a lot of moisture or regular watering such as large Lobelias, Irises. Perennial Cornflowers, Hollyhocks, Michaelmas Daisys etc.

Dry hanging baskets always lose water. It the baskets were already damp then the water wouldn't drip through.

 

Hi, thanks, yes, I have the gel crystals in there.
The new baskets I replanted, I gave them a real good soak, mid afternoon, so when I came to water last night, they were still damp, and still the water went everywhere! That’s what I’m saying, wet or dry, those baskets don’t hold water!
The hanging pots, do they still have drainage holes in the bottom?

 

Like these? Hanging pots 27 cm vivid colours They are like my baskets, without the little hatches all over where the water gets out. The drainage hole on the bottom is raised so a little can stay there, I like it.
They come in a case of 46, anyone wanna go tenths?

Yes, that's the sort. That's a wholesalers supplying direct to trade though.

Try The Range, B&M, B&Q, or Poundland ( like everything else though you'll pay more at Poundland < one if the most expensive shops around in my opinion > ). The only problem is it's getting a little late in the season now though.

 

Money saving tip:
I use nappies, they are much much cheaper than buying water retention crystals. I got 36 nappies for £3.99. 1 nappy did 2 hanging baskets.
