Are wild Cherries edible?

Presumably, because of the continuing fantastic summer, the cherries on our 30 odd wild cherries have ripened to a very appetising colour. I took a chance and scoffed 1 yesterday (still alive, well obviously) and it was delicious. Rather small and big stone in comparison to shop bought but still tasty.
I plan to go on the hunt for loads today and then wondered if they are ok to eat in quantity? I also have a huge/ancient ornamental cherry which looks as tho it too is going to be producing vast amounts of fruit. Are these ok to eat too? Hope so as cherries are my favourite fruit.

 

Wild cherries fruit here every year. The ones I’ve tried are rather tasteless and sour. Presumably they are fine to eat in quantity as cultivars originated from the wild ones.

 

Thanks @Redwing. Yes ours fruit every year too but don't go soft/ripen. The 1 I picked was sweet and yummy so going to have a go at picking a good doze and keep that they have no ill effects.. If you never see me post again on GC you'll know why

You had me scampering to Google Prunus Padus @Zigs as just in from filling my "boots" with cherries. However, from what I can see the fruits are black so I think you'll have to put up with me for a little longer. That said my stomach is making rather funny noises but then I have probably eaten about 2 lbs of cherries. It was very much a case of "oh 1 more won't hurt and oh that looks a nice 1 and so does that" Why do I get this feeling I could regret stuffing my face?

 

Don't crack the stones, they contain cyanogenetic glycosides, same as apple pips

 

Anyone is welcome to the wild berries on our back...the mess off the birds when they've eaten them is atrocious...purple dye on the slabs

They are throwing cherries at you round here this year, they are ripening faster than they can pick them.
Never tried wild ones, usually the birds get them before they are ripe.
