Plans for the new winery were rejected by Medway Council’s Planning Committee in March 2022 and are now being appealed by Vineyard Farms at an Inquiry to be held at the Corn Exchange, Rochester at 10am on Thursday 23rd March 2023 for between 9 and 11 days. Individual speakers may request to speak if present on the first day of the appeal.

Below is the full Statement of Case submitted by Cuxton Parish Council and Cuxton Against the Winery in December 2022, together with the Barrister’s advice, courtesy of Brian MacDonald, on the legal situation regarding Green Belt.

• This will not bring jobs to Medway
  The UK has an acute shortage of workers in agriculture, hospitality, construction, and transportation, and, importantly, seasonal migrant workers. This facility would take workers from employment elsewhere in Medway, Kent and from abroad.
• KWV’s ‘sustainable transport’ plan is misleading
  It is based on traffic data taken at one edge of the village, not those entering the congested village centre. An independent survey showed levels of traffic were actually 4 X greater. This will be intolerable for residents.
• Insufficient waste water capacity
  Southern Water’s current capability to dispose of wastewater environmentally safely is insufficient for this development. Other areas in the region are halting construction work because of water shortages and contamination.
• This huge commercial building
  With an area of two football pitches, gouged 11 metres into the chalk hill, will function 6am – 12pm in an area of peace and dark skies, nationally protected as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and Green Belt.
• AONB damage
  In adjacent Luddesdown, also in the AONB, KWV have ploughed up the same type of chalk grassland habitat, including nesting ground for skylarks, a bird on the Red list of greatest conservation concern. The Biodiversity Officer considers this habitat essential for maintaining biodiversity.

A protest page opposing the Vineyard Farms plans that will destroy an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty at Upper Bush in Cuxton, Kent and impinge on the Metropolitan Green Belt between Medway & Gravesend.

 

Yes been there got the T shirt I tried once full of principals and morals and believed that I could buck the system then ended up with more knives in my back than Julius Caesar

 

I have sympathy with you Woo. Planning is always a total con.
Around here they took some green belt for future development with absolute conditions applied for xyz reasons including separation of towns. A proposal went in to the planning committee yesterday with huge number of objections based on what is not acceptable under council planning requirements and the requirements of the conditions. You'll never guess what happened...

 

Hello did someone mention my name hopefully I shall be there tomorrow if they let me in Ive met him once he certainly worked for his money started at 16 selling Peat by the wheelbarrow load he's an Essex boy left school delivered sanswiches on a bike etc there's no airs and graces with him,I just don't want his grapes on my doorstep

The annoying thing is that even if the residents are successful and convince the council in rejection then the subsequent appeal will just approve it. We had the same here with a tower block

I can't spot a difference

The 'Before' picture has oilseed rape which to my mind is worse than seeing grapevines, and the rape smells awful if you have one nearby in wet weather.

We have a few vineyards around here, I don't see them as intrusive or spoiling the view. My only gripe is their wine is way too expensive.

 

With respect I never said I found them intrusive or spoiling my view ,this thread is not about how other people see them or your perception of them its a personal thing to me and I shall keep fighting to keep the Green belt and areas of natural outstanding beauty as it is

 

Its all this Global warming let see what happens when we have some cold Winters back again
