Maybe... just maybe, using punitive taxation and enforcing mandatory measures isn't the best way to demonstrate to folks that something is as good an idea as you want them to think it is?

Three letter acronyms can mean anything you wish. That's why they are a load of rubbish most of the time.

 

So you think it is perfectly acceptable to ride roughshod over the views of those who are reluctant/reactionary/recalcitrant? Would that not be wholly undemocratic and in fact dictatorial?

It was intimated within your question, whether intentional or not.

Nothing, is the answer. Regardless of what situation we are looking at, if a product or service is good enough and the features/benefits are significant enough, then consumers will latch on to it and it will take off. Take smartphones as an example - when the idea of those were first dangled, it was only really gadget geeks that were excited about it... the idea proved itself and advanced quite rapidly and now the people that don't have one are in the minority.

The problem we have specific to EV's and indeed motoring overall, is that it is currently all stick and no carrot. The public are not stupid and they can see this - they can see the diesel boom barely in the rear view mirror and are looking at EV's and thinking that we are about to get hammered again... and all the while, local authorities are hammering us in other ways.

 

Or at the least ask but don't force.

 

Apparently, the claim is that it is to prevent people selling cars that need a lot of work... however, a lot of classic cars are sold in need of restoration as part of estate sales following someone passing away - so if the owner is deceased, what happens there? Also, insurers have already started down this vein, by writing off cars that could be repaired, regardless of the value of the claim and they state they cannot sell the car back to the owner for them to repair it themselves because of emissions regulations. I know someone who had this very thing and in the end they got the third party to pay direct for the repairs to avoid there being an insurance claim.
