So citizens of 75 and over aren't worthy of any say in how the country they live in is governed? Sounds very dictatorial to me. Does that also mean that we bin any MP that is or will reach the retirement age of 67 during the course of an electoral term? Same for local councillors, mayors etc too, of course. One would also assume that as their right to vote had been removed, they would no longer be liable for any tax, even if they were loaded and had lots of property?

As for lowering the age of voting, surely if children are deemed fit to vote, they should also be deemed fit to drive, drink alcohol, have the full minimum wage, have full adult responsibility should they commit a crime, serve on the front line in a military sense and so on?

Of course, all of that would need to be voted on for it to become the process - and of course the over 75's wouldn't be precluded from that vote...

They vote based on trivia e.g. "I don't like that woman"!

But surely that is their right, if that is the way they feel?

Are you suggesting you want to discuss "rights" now?

I'm not suggesting anything - as I recall, you were the one that was suggesting we shouldn't be allowing some people to vote because they vote for the "wrong" reasons?

Perhaps your recall is not too good or you have read incorrectly or even on the wrong post?

That is entirely possible, of course. So when you said that people don't vote sensibly now, what was your solution for that? Were you not inferring that they shouldn't be allowed to vote?

You didn’t … and I didn’t say you did. But you did say that it isn’t hard to register … all I did was point out that it’s harder for some people than others … so why not make it simpler for everyone if that’s possible … and it seems that it is :)

No, you seem to be one of those wanting to stop people voting... And yes I realise it's hard to keep up for some of us oldies, we just have to keep taking our pills.

I don't know where you've got that from - I was merely discussing the lowering of the voting age to 16 and indeed the suggestion that over 75's shouldn't be allowed to vote. I personally disagree with both notions, but that is the joy of a democracy, we are all able to have our opinion.

As for pills, if I have to take any more, there is a risk that I may shoot someone if I fart.

As with all elections its mostly about how gullible people are.

I just think that a 16 yr old is likely to be more gullible than say a 40 yr old.

Most 16 year olds couldn't care less, trying to get a 19 year old and a 21 year old to vote is bad enough :noidea:

As an aside, Keir Starmer was typically embarrassing on the debate tonight, failed to answer any questions or commit to anything tangible in their negative waffle :noidea:

My point was, if a 16 year old is not mature enough to vote, at some point many people lose some/all of their faculties as they age.
In reality I don't believe either should be the case, but i don't think it is unreasonable, and there are some pretty gullible 75 year olds.

Re: todays debate, Sunak was the ridiculous one, trying to defend the totally indefensible , 14 years of failure, how can anyone defend Liz Truss, or Boris and how on earth are a few hundred flights to Rwanda going to solve anything.

Vote at 16? There's a good argument for it somewhere but I recall being full of raging hormones and conflicting ideals, thinking I knew it all but really not. I might suggest it's not a fab prospect.
No issues over auto enrollment for voting, although I rather feel it's just a sound bite for the election
