I agree about assisted dying, it should be a personal choice available to everyone.

As said earlier, I would only support the death penalty in open and shut cases and not on the whim of judge or jury.

I am wholly against war. Politicians or unelected leaders deciding random civilians will die horribly just to further their agendas is utterly abhorrent.

I don't agree opposing the death sentence demonstrates a warped sense of humour. I think it acknowledges the complexity of human existence.

 

No, I didn’t intend to suggest that opposing the death sentence demonstrates a warped sense of humour. I meant to say that people who support killing animals for food, or even for fun, but mostly for food, cannot in my opinion say that killing people is any different. Therefore, meat eaters should support the death penalty.

Definitely agree there.

But I think this is about setting an example and pushing up the standards in public life. Shaming people and changing the culture away from a purely self-interested one, treating the police as a public service, disincentivising violent behaviour and helping people feel safer as a result. If people feel safer (whether its warranted or not), there should, hopefully be less crime. Would fewer people carry knives for "protection" if they thought the police would protect them?

The problem is of course that expectations will change and the police are going to have to consistently maintain this higher standard or it won't work and the relief will be short-lived. At least Starmer with his background probably has a good understanding of the law and it will raise officer morale.

 

Regarding carrying a knife, I don't believe any of this, its for my own protection, of course they will say that when caught, or asked by a TV reporter.

It's part of being Hard, and amongst certain groups a way of life, even traditional.

Any knife is bad enough but some of the ones they carry now are virtually guaranteed to kill.
And then of course there are the machete carrying crowd.

How you change that way of thinking is beyond me.

 

I occasionally carry a penknife if we are going out for the day - or on holiday. For cutting an apple.

 

I've carried a small knife in my pocket all my life, its surprising how often it has come in handy.
The blade is about 3in long.

It's not a so called zombie knife.

Personally I blame Rambo.
