I agree about assisted dying, it should be a personal choice available to everyone.

As said earlier, I would only support the death penalty in open and shut cases and not on the whim of judge or jury.

I am wholly against war. Politicians or unelected leaders deciding random civilians will die horribly just to further their agendas is utterly abhorrent.

I don't agree opposing the death sentence demonstrates a warped sense of humour. I think it acknowledges the complexity of human existence.

No, I didn’t intend to suggest that opposing the death sentence demonstrates a warped sense of humour. I meant to say that people who support killing animals for food, or even for fun, but mostly for food, cannot in my opinion say that killing people is any different. Therefore, meat eaters should support the death penalty.

We will have to disagree on that. :)

I think the main issue with the death penalty is as has already been raised - errors; whether we like it or not, our legal system is fallible, plus there would be massively increased risk of someone who was wholly innocent being 'stitched up' with a crime, purely so police can tick a box and say that they have solved it. Indeed, I'd go as far as to say that it would be vulnerable groups that would be even more at risk of being stitched up.

I am not against rapists and child molesters being medically castrated though - even in the event of an error, they are still alive (although that would be one hell of a compensation payout)

Our sentencing simply hasn't kept pace with the real world (a debate I would often have with our old friend @ARMANDII) - there are many judges who don't even own a TV, spend their days between court rooms and their own private studies etc, that simply do not have a clue what goes on out in the real world.

We need to get back to stopping and searching - if caught with a weapon of any variety, then that should be a 10 year stretch, minimum and mandatory. Use that weapon then that is 20 years minimum with any further award for injury or death caused running consecutively only (none of this concurrent nonsense); theft/robbery/shoplifting - start at 2 years and work up with each subsequent offence (2, 5, 10, 20, 35 and so on), the exception being someone stealing food or sanitary products because they were destitute and had exhausted other avenues (food banks etc) - under those circumstances, it should be immediately referred to social services and they in turn should be forced to ensure relevant support, with the council being subject to some form of legal penalty if they do not provide that support. Whilst at it, I'd also make it a legal requirement that supermarkets should team up with local food bank(s) and pass any food to them rather than waste it; anything that is on it's last day that hasn't sold on a discount sticker should then be immediately frozen where it is possible and passed on in frozen form to the food banks.

            Definitely agree there.

But I think this is about setting an example and pushing up the standards in public life. Shaming people and changing the culture away from a purely self-interested one, treating the police as a public service, disincentivising violent behaviour and helping people feel safer as a result. If people feel safer (whether its warranted or not), there should, hopefully be less crime. Would fewer people carry knives for "protection" if they thought the police would protect them?

The problem is of course that expectations will change and the police are going to have to consistently maintain this higher standard or it won't work and the relief will be short-lived. At least Starmer with his background probably has a good understanding of the law and it will raise officer morale.

Regarding carrying a knife, I don't believe any of this, its for my own protection, of course they will say that when caught, or asked by a TV reporter.

It's part of being Hard, and amongst certain groups a way of life, even traditional.

Any knife is bad enough but some of the ones they carry now are virtually guaranteed to kill.
And then of course there are the machete carrying crowd.

How you change that way of thinking is beyond me.

I occasionally carry a penknife if we are going out for the day - or on holiday. For cutting an apple.

I don't think you are the risk here though - it is not penknives that are being used to maim and kill, it is machetes etc

I've carried a small knife in my pocket all my life, its surprising how often it has come in handy.
The blade is about 3in long.

It's not a so called zombie knife.

                    Personally I blame Rambo.

I carry a small Swiss knife with me all the time except when going abroad. When going abroad the knife has to go in hold luggage. I made that mistake once and had it in my pocket going through security. Fortunately we had plenty of time so I backed out of security bought a birthday card in the stationery shop at the airport and put the knife in there (hold luggage had already gone through) and posted it home. :blue thumb: Then went back through security.
