I'm not as convinced as you about the power companies being accurate. I have a number of instances where my bills are obviously incorrect e.g. they charged me three days in succession for the same monthly bill and another time my online account said I had over £7,000 in it. For some reason they didn't seem keen on sending me a cheque for it when I asked for it :heehee:. It then mysteriously disappeared from my online account and when I challenged them about it they denied it had ever happened. They had to backtrack on that when I sent them a screenshot that I had saved.

A lot of people don't check their bills so I am sure there are many inaccuracies not recorded.

Although I have no direct knowledge of them giving lower charges at certain times I would guess that those times where it could be advantageous are not that frequent or convenient.

I have friends who have been offered these very short term cheap rates (none have been paid to use energy) and they say the advantage is minimal as the timings are also when they don't particularly wish to use extra power.

I have also been offered reduced cost times but none of them have been at convenient times - although they may be convenient to others.

Also, I'm old enough to remember back to the three day week and the chaos caused by there being various ways of coping with it but in an extremely disorganised way. I don't have a great deal of faith in governments and large organisations managing these situations efficiently.

There is a problem with trying to use off peak electricity for power hungry jobs such as washing machines, dish washers and tumble dryers. The advice is not to leave these devices unattended. Do people have to change their sleeping patterns in order to make use of cheaper electricity?

Not a pop at EV's but how fires are on the increase where lithium-ion batteries are more likely to have been the cause. The National fire chiefs council have said, fires involving lithium-ion batteries are a disaster waiting to happen.

Fires in bin lorries and waste/recycling plants has seen a 71% increase in fires in 2023 compared to 2022.

Over 1,200 battery fires in bin lorries and waste sites across the UK in last year - NFCC

One recycling site has ignited three times in Hertfordshire since 2021, I wouldn't want to live in close proximity to a waste recycling site.

Somewhat off-topic but trying to recycle larger li-ion batteries where I live is a pain. A number of places claim they will accept old li-ion batteries but in reality will only take small ones. I have dead batteries from garden equipment and a cordless vacuum cleaner. The only way to get them recycled is to make an appointment at my local recycling centre which is 10 mile round trip.

Many have tried to instigate sensible conversation around lithium battery fires, but it is generally quelled by the evangelists wailing with whataboutery that other stuff catches fire too. There is also a refusal to accept that where they are involved in a fire, even if not the cause of the fire, their presence changes the dynamic of the fire significantly and not for the better.

Even London Fire Brigade can see the danger looming, yet as it stands, it seems that they are being ignored - Edgware: Fire safety issues raised over EV bus depot plans

Yes, unfortunately the chances of a sensible conversation about the dangers - what they are, how to mitigate, how to weigh it up etc are usually stymied by the conversation starting with the false claim that EV's are more likely to burst into flames than ICE vehicles. It takes a while to sort that one out, before we can then think about what the actual dangers of EV lithium battery fires are.

Why does it take a while to sort that one out? It is usually sorted out with one line - they are less likely to catch fire. Perhaps the root of the thinking that they are more likely to catch fire needs to be considered? For me, the root does not sit within likelihood of the event taking place, but rather the severity when it does.

Only just last week, a Ford Sierra Cosworth that had suffered an engine fire sold for £52k at auction; if that was a Tesla, there wouldn't be anything left to sell. That, is the difference.

I think we all know nothing will be done until the public force it to happen following a catastrophic fire causing multiple, and avoidable, casualties

The Government is pushing EV's and penalising companies who don't sell a high enough percentage. At the same time they are introducing 'car tax' on them and reducing subsidies on purchase.
